ISS Research Lab

This yearlong program provides high school students with the opportunity to work in a team setting to conceive, design, build, test, integrate, and qualify computer-controlled custom science experiments that are launched to the International Space Station. The experiments are active on the ISS for 30-days. Each experiment module contains a digital camera and student-programmed micro- controller. Participation fulfills the AMSE Research Project requirement for AMSE Honors students.

Pre-requisite: Completion of the VCJH Space Elective, VCHS ISS Space Program, or previous VCHS ISS Research Lab experience.

Students applying to an AMSE Program must be an AMSE Member or AMSE Honors participant.

The demand for AMSE programs is high and the selection process varies between programs. While we strive to accommodate as many students as possible, placement is not guaranteed. When program enrollment is impacted, 11th and 12th-grade applicants generally receive priority.

The ISS Research Lab Program Manager will review all student applications and may conduct interviews. Selection criteria will include a student’s course schedule, previous program experience, and responses to the application questions.
